How walking calories are calculated

Exercise science measures activity in METs, multiples of your resting burn. Sitting quietly is 1 MET. Walking at an average pace is 3.5, which means it burns three and a half times your resting rate for as long as you keep it up.

Calories = MET × weight (kg) × hours
2.0 mph = 2.8 · 2.5 mph = 3.0 · 3.0 mph = 3.5 · 3.5 mph = 4.3 · 4.0+ mph = 5.0

Two things fall out of that formula worth noticing. Heavier people burn meaningfully more per mile, so the generic "100 calories per mile" line is only right for some bodies. And pace matters less than people hope; walking faster raises the burn per minute but shortens the minutes, so total distance does most of the work.

What the formula leaves out: hills, stairs, sand, and carried weight, all of which push the true number up. If your walks are hilly, treat the result as your floor.

Where walking fits in a fat-loss week

Walking is the most underrated tool a busy adult has, for one reason: it doesn't need recovery, a gym, or a change of clothes. It stacks onto the day you already have. Researchers who study daily movement keep finding that this everyday activity separates lean from heavy adults more than gym sessions do.

Make it arithmetic, then make it automatic. A daily 30-minute walk at an average pace burns roughly the calories the widget just showed you, seven days a week, whether or not you trained. Attach it to something fixed: the school run, lunch, the first call of the day taken on foot.
